Can you use a rented Starlink while driving?
Yes, if the plan and the kit allow it. Starlink supports in-motion use on its Roam and Priority plans, at up to 100 mph, in places where it's approved. Residential plans don't allow it at all. So before you count on internet in the car, ask the rental company which plan the kit is on.
We're a directory, not a rental company. We don't rent, ship, or set up kits, and we don't take bookings. The rules below come from Starlink's own pages, read October 18, 2026.
Which Starlink plans work while you're moving?
- Roam. In motion at up to 100 mph where it's approved, including inland waterways and territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles from shore.
- Local Priority. Inland coverage, including lakes and rivers. It doesn't cover coastal waters or the ocean.
- Global Priority. Land and ocean, anywhere Starlink is available.
- Residential. No in-motion use on any Residential plan. Starlink also says Standby Mode, its paused state, isn't meant for use on the move.
Why does the plan matter more with a rental?
A rented kit usually runs on the rental company's Starlink account, so its plan decides what you can do. Starlink's own rent option, offered in select countries, is for Residential plans only, so a kit rented that way isn't meant for the road. Third-party companies choose their own plans, which is why the question is worth asking.
Which kits does Starlink support in motion?
Starlink lists Starlink Mini, Standard 4, Standard 4 X, and Performance (Gen 2 and Gen 3). It doesn't recommend actuated models, like Standard Actuated, which have motors inside and aren't designed for in-motion use. Many rental pages say “Standard” without naming the model, so ask which one you'll get. For the size and power differences, see Mini vs Standard.
Which rental companies say their kits work on the move?
Three companies in our directory name in-motion use on their own pages:
- OER Rentals says its Starlink Mini rentals can be used in motion at up to 100 mph, and offshore up to 12 nautical miles from the coast.
- LEOLinx lists an In-Motion kit alongside its Mini and Standard kits.
- Landwide, in Australia, lists a Starlink Mini in Motion kit.
All three appear under the RV and camping filter in the directory. Other companies may allow driving without saying so on their pages, so ask before you book.
How do you mount Starlink on a moving vehicle?
Firmly, on a mount made for the job. Starlink's Mini Mobility Mount guide asks for a structurally sound, horizontal surface with a clear view of the sky. The mount screws or bolts to the vehicle, and the guide warns that equipment falling off a vehicle can cause serious accidents. It also says mounts aren't built for high winds, so use a tether, and that the install should follow local transportation rules.
Ask whether a vehicle mount comes with the kit. If it doesn't, or if it needs holes drilled, check with the vehicle's owner first, especially on a rental car or RV. The kit also needs power while you drive, and how much power Starlink uses helps you plan for it.
Where can't you use Starlink while driving?
Starlink says in-motion use on land is prohibited in several countries, including Mexico, Japan, Spain, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Use on the water is allowed in those places. Its list of countries approved for at least one kind of in-motion use includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. If your drive crosses a border, the international travel guide covers which plans work abroad.
What should you ask the rental company?
- Which Starlink plan is the kit on?
- Do your rental terms allow use while driving?
- Which kit model will I get?
- Does a vehicle mount come with it, and does it need drilling?
- How do I power it in the vehicle?
- Does the plan cover everywhere I'm driving?
The rest of the booking questions, from deposit to return, are in what to confirm before you book.
