Guides / When the data runs out

What happens when a rented Starlink runs out of data?

It depends on the plan the kit runs on. Starlink says that on Roam 100GB and 300GB, service switches to low-speed data once you use the allowance. On a Priority plan, it says speeds drop to 1 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up if you've opted out of extra data, and it bills the extra data if you've opted in. Before you book, ask the rental company which plan the kit is on and what happens after the data is gone. We're a directory. We don't rent, ship, or set up kits, and we don't take bookings.

What happens on each plan?

Here's what Starlink's own help articles say about running past the included data:

  • Roam 100GB and 300GB. Starlink says that if you exceed the allowance, service switches to low-speed unlimited data. It says low-speed supports email, calls, and texts, and that video streaming, large downloads, and video calls are limited.
  • Roam 50GB. Starlink lists additional data as something you can buy for this plan. The Roam article doesn't describe the low-speed switch for 50GB, so ask the company what happens on this plan.
  • Local Priority and Global Priority. Starlink says you can opt out of additional data, and after your Priority data is used, speeds are limited to 1 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up. If you opt in, you can add data in 50GB blocks, and it says extra data you use is billed on your next bill.
  • Roam Unlimited. On the water, Starlink says Ocean Mode is how you get coverage beyond 12 nautical miles. You opt in and pay per GB, and it gives higher priority than Roam data.

Starlink also says Local Priority and Global Priority customers get network precedence over customers on Standard or Roam data. So the plan changes more than the data amount. Starlink says its fair use policy exists so a small number of heavy users don't affect everyone else. See also its article on the differences between data.

Does unused data carry over?

No, for Priority. Starlink says all Priority data, including top-ups, expires at the end of the billing cycle. Automatic top-ups are off by default, and when you turn them on, a 50GB block is added each time your data is used up. Starlink says top-ups only apply to the current cycle.

For a short rental, the billing cycle matters. Ask whether your dates fit inside one cycle, or whether the kit's data renews partway through your trip.

How fast can you use it up?

Starlink's data guide gives rough rates: standard-definition video uses about 0.7 GB an hour, HD about 3 GB an hour, and 4K about 7 GB an hour or more. It also says each speed test can use about 1 GB or more, and that movie downloads and game updates can top 100 GB.

Two surprises are worth knowing. Starlink says phones, consoles, and vehicles can download big updates over Wi-Fi in the background, and the router itself typically uses 1–5 GB a month for updates and health checks. Set a strong Wi-Fi password so no one else joins your network, and turn on your devices' low data mode. If you're streaming from the kit, our live-streaming guide covers upload speeds.

Here's a quick example, using Starlink's rate and a made-up allowance. With 100 GB and HD video at about 3 GB an hour, you'd have roughly 33 hours of video, before anyone downloads an update. Multiply by the number of people sharing the kit, and by the days of your trip.

How do you check what's left?

Starlink says you can track monthly data usage in your account on starlink.com or in the Starlink app, and that it measures usage per byte at the network level. It also says your bill may show less than the in-app data tracker, because it subtracts data used for backend operations such as software updates. The router can't give a breakdown by device, but the app's Network screen lists every device that's connected, so you can spot one you don't recognize.

If the rental company owns the account, you may not be able to see any of this. Ask them to check usage with you part-way through the trip.

Who gets the warnings and the bill?

Starlink says Priority plans send an email and a push notification at 80% and 100% of your data, if usage notifications are on in the app. It also says additional data is bought, and opted in or out, through the Starlink account. The charge shows up on that account's bill.

On a rented kit, the account may not be yours. Ask who is signed in to it, who sees the alerts, and who decides whether to add data mid-trip.

Is that the same as Starlink's own rent option?

No. Starlink has its own rent option, which isn't what this directory lists. Starlink says its rental kits are for Residential plans only, can't be paused, and can't be transferred to another person or location. It also says customers on that option may not be allowed to change plans. Companies in our directory set their own terms, so don't assume those rules apply. See Starlink's article on the rent option and its article on changing your plan.

What should you ask the rental company?

  • Which Starlink plan is the kit on, and how much data comes with it?
  • When the data is gone, does the kit slow down, stop, or charge per GB? Ask them to put that in writing.
  • Can you add more data mid-trip, and who pays for it?
  • Where do the 80% and 100% alerts go, and can you see usage yourself?
  • Does the data renew partway through your dates? If you extend, does the allowance change?
  • Are there limits on use, such as streaming, large downloads, or using the kit in another country?
